AMERICA' S NEXT TOP MODEL CASTING CALL

Dutch Gardens, Inc.

Casting
(performing arts)

In the performing arts, casting (or casting call) is a vital pre-production process for selecting a cast (a meaning of the word recorded since 1631) of actors, dancers, singers, models and other talent for a live or recorded performance.

Casting process
It sometimes involves a series of auditions before a casting panel, composed of individuals such as the producer, director and/or choreographer. In the early stages of the process, candidate performers often may present prepared audition pieces such as monologues or songs. Later stages may involve groups of candidates attempting material from the work under consideration in various combinations; the casting panel considers both the talent of the individual actors and the chemistry of their combination.
There are exceptions to this.

When a Casting director is working on a Print Advertising or TV Commercial casting project, then the talent comes in and is photographed or put on video with no one else in the casting session. The day's work of all the talent is then viewed on a website by the clients. A choice can occur that day or the next day with the production being only days away. There is more of this type of casting (commercial/print) going on than any other type.

Depending on the prestige of the role, casting calls may go out to the public at large (typical for community theatre), to professional and semi-professional local actors (for supporting roles in theatre and film) or to specifically selected actors (for leading roles, especially in films).

?     In the production of film and television, a similar process is followed. However, especially for major productions, the process of selecting candidates for sometimes hundreds of parts and possibly thousands of extras may often require specialised staff; while the last word remains with the people in artistic and production charge, a Casting director (and/or Casting Assistant, Casting Associate) may be in charge of most of the daily work involved in this recruiting process during pre-production; in addition the "CD" may also remain as liaison between director, actors and their agents once the parts have been cast. Some of them build an impressive career, e.g. working on numerous ambitious Hollywood productions, such as Mary Jo Slater, Rick Pagana and Rick Millikan. The significant organisation of professional screen - and theater casting in the US is the Casting Society of America (CSA), but membership is optional.

At least in the early stages and for extras, casting may be decentralized geographically, often in conjunction with actual shooting planned in different states, e.g. in Hollywood or New York (studio) and one or more exotic locations (e.g. Hawaii, the Far East) and/or budget locations, e.g. Canada, Ireland. Another reason may be tapping in to each home market in the case of an international co-production. However for the top parts, the choice of one or more celebrities, whose presence is of enormous commercial importance, may rather follow strictly personal channels, e.g. direct contact with the director.

?     The resulting list of actors filling the parts is called a cast list.

The industry is contentious,
with frequent discontent arising from charges of nepotism, stereotyping and bigotry. The term Casting Couch emerged during the so-called "Golden Age" of Hollywood, when would-be-stars often granted sexual favors to directors and/or producers on prospective projects. Celebrated Hollywood and

Broadway director Elia Kazan in his autobiography described the Golden Age casting process like this: "when it came to actresses, not Darryl [Zanuck], not Harry Cohn, not Louis Mayer, not Sam Goldwyn needed consultation. They went by a simple rule and a useful one: Do I want to fuck her? I believe this rule of casting is not only inevitable but correct, and quite the best method for the kind of films they made" (p. 229).
Current Daytime Drama Casting Directors

?     Christy Dooley - The Bold & The Beautiful
?     Marnie Saitta - Days of Our Lives
?     Mark Teschner - General Hospital
?     Rob Decina - Guiding Light
?     Karen Rea - The Young And The Restless

Stunt casting
is a term in casting that refers to hiring well known actors, such as movie stars, to play bit parts on television series and in films.[1] Stunt casting now also occurs in Broadway productions.[2] Stunt casting makes roles traditionally played by character actors unavailable to them.

Typecasting is the process by which an actor is strongly identified with a specific character, one or more particular roles, or characters with the same traits.    www.Martianrocker.com

The process of selecting an actor
Actors are selected for their roles either by a casting director, typically found in small productions, or, in larger productions such as motion pictures, a group referred to as central casting. Central casting often exhibits a pattern of placing an actor in subsequent similar character roles after his or her first success, especially if an actor is particularly well-received in that role by the audience or by critics. Typecasting happens to actors of both great and modest ability: an actor may become typecast either because of a strong identification with a particular role or because he or she lacks the versatility or talent to move on to other roles. Some actors welcome the steady work that typecasting brings, but in general it is seen as undesirable.

............................................................... Child actors

The term child actor is generally applied to a child acting in motion pictures or television, but also to an adult who began his or her acting career as a child; to avoid confusion the latter is also called a former child actor. Closely associated is teenage actor, an actor who reached popularity as a teenager.
In some countries child actors in the performing arts (television, film or stage) are prohibited from doing certain things.[citation needed] In these countries, a child actor may not:

1     risk his or her physical well being (no dangerous stunts)
2     be exposed to morally compromising situations
3     be nude or partially nude
4     engage in overt sexual acts
5     to be victims of any kind

Compulsory education laws mandate that the education of child actor not be disrupted while the child is working. Whether a child actor is enrolled in public school, private school, or home school, the child does schoolwork under the supervision of a set teacher while on the set.
Finally, the hours a child actor may work are limited. Generally, stricter time limits are imposed for younger actors. A very young infant might be allowed "under the lights" only a few minutes a day. It is common in television production for the role of a young child to be portrayed by identical twins to reduce each child's time on set.
When a child turns 18, the legal limits on work time are lifted.

Regulation of child actors

The activities of child actors are regulated by the governing labor union, if any, and state and federal laws. Being a minor, a child actor must secure a work permit before accepting any paid performing work.
Limitations imposed by laws are not uniform across the states or beyond national boundaries. Longer work hours or risky stunts, prohibited in California, for example, might be permitted to a project filming in British Columbia. Some projects film in remote locations specifically to evade regulations intended to protect the child.

Issues involving child actors - Ownership of earnings

Using children in motion pictures has been criticized as exploitation, particularly since some prominent child actors never got to see the money they earned. Jackie Coogan became a millionaire while still a child but almost all of his money was used by his parents.
Some have defended this saying that the child directly benefited from the lifestyle the earnings made possible or that the child would not have achieved stardom without a significant investment of time and effort by the parents. Others argue that it is unfair for the child to have to support the family when the parents are capable, as this tends to invert the parent child relationship.
In 1939, California weighed in on this controversy by enacting the original Coogan Law, amended at various times since, which requires a portion of the earnings of a child actor to be preserved in a special savings account called a blocked trust.

Equity, AGMA Try to Control Rockettes Pact
Actors' Equity Association and the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), in a newly united effort, are attempting to stage a coup against the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA), the union that represents the legendary dance troupe the Rockettes in its contract with Radio City Music Hall.

Equity, AGMA Split Over Pact
Actors' Equity Association and the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA)—two performers' unions that have in recent years made an attempt at co-jurisdiction on Broadway and considered the possibility of merger—have parted ways.

Musicians Okay B'way Pact
Broadway musicians, who struck for four days in March to protect so-called orchestra "minimums" in Main Stem theatres, have approved their new contract with producers.

Labor Affiliation

Equity is a member of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). The AFL-CIO is the umbrella organization for a federation of unions. It gives voice to legislative and social issues of the American worker.

All of the major performing artist unions are a part of the AFL-CIO. Although autonomous, these sister unions are part of the Associated Actors and Artistes of America (4As).

Equity is the member of the 4As that covers Actors and Stage managers performing in plays, musicals and revues on the legitimate stage. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) covers film television and digital media. AFTRA, the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists, covers actors and announcers in television, radio and digital media. The American Guild of Musical Artists, AGMA, covers opera, dance and concert performances. AGVA, the American Guild of Variety Artists, covers nightclubs, arena shows and ice shows. Each union has its own niche and understands the concerns of its members. The 4As supports decisions of its sister unions and offers a collective voice for performing artist labor issues.
